Mansfield ISD Honors Its Newest Namesakes
T
he Mansfield ISD school board officially approved the namesakes for the district’s five newest educational facilities.
Each namesake was unanimously recommended by the Facility Naming Committee, which consisted of two board
members, three staff members and two community members. The committee considered each individual’s service and
dedication to Mansfield ISD, testimonials received and number of nominations.
Jerry Knight is the namesake for the district’s new STEM Academy, which opened
this school year. Knight served MISD for 22 years as director of career and technical
education. He was integral in designing and staffing Ben Barber Innovation Academy and is
acclaimed for his devotion to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education.
Dr. Sarah Jandrucko will be the namesake for
the district’s new pre-kindergarten center that is scheduled to open in fall 2018. Dr.
Jandrucko served the district for 34 years as a teacher, principal, and director/assistant
superintendent of elementary education. She was known for making early childhood
education a priority and applauded for being an advocate for all students.
Brenda Norwood will have her name on Elementary School #24, which will be built
under the May 2017 bond package. Norwood was the first African-American employee
of MISD and has given the district more than 40 years of service. She was also part of the
district’s first integrated graduating class in 1966. Norwood volunteers and substitutes at
MISD campuses and was commended for her positivity and love of children.
Alma Martinez will be the name placed on Intermediate School #7, which will
be built under the May 2017 bond package. She will be the first Hispanic namesake for
Mansfield ISD. Martinez served MISD for 30 years, starting as a teacher and working
her way up to become a principal at the elementary and intermediate level. Martinez is
recognized for being a great mentor and having a big heart.
Charlene McKinze y will be the namesake for Middle School #7, which will be built
under the May 2017 bond package. McKinzey served as an English Language Arts/Reading
(ELAR) teacher for 20 years before passing away from pancreatic cancer. She taught at
Rogene Worley, T.A. Howard, and Brooks Wester middle schools during her teaching career.
Those who knew her remembered her for her passion for students and learning.
