Crossrail Platform Screen Door Installation

We are the sole supplier of the Crossrail floor-to-ceiling platform screen door (PSD) installation for eight new underground stations of the Elizabeth Line. The platforms on the new stations are longer than most existing London Underground stations, with a platform length of over 250 metres – that means installing about 4 kilometres of platform screen doors in total.

Knorr-Bremse Rail System (UK) Limited, who was awarded the contract for the provision of platform screen doors for the project, will be testing the PSD system as well as training staff at its Wolverton facility near Milton Keynes. The screen doors will be installed, tested and commissioned by the end of 2017, with passenger service beginning on the new Elizabeth underground line at the end of 2018.

The doors will be made of laminated glass with minimal framing. They will be integrated with the platform edge, fully enclosing the platform and blending seamlessly into the overall station design. Information screens will be located above each door that will provide up-to-date station and line information. Additional vertically mounted screens will be positioned between the doors to show advertising.

The doors are a safety feature for the stations as they provide a physical barrier between the platform and the track, but they also help in a number of other ways. Since the doors enclose the platform, it prevents air from entering or escaping the platform making air conditioning more cost effective. Smaller air conditioning units can be installed which will reduce electricity costs. Cleaning and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the screen doors will prevent dust, dirt and other particles from blowing onto the platform as a train moves through the station.
