ver the last year, the demand data protection related roles has been on the rise. This is thanks
in part to new legislation/regulation being introduced in the EU next year. You've likely heard GDPR mentioned in your own organisation. EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the result of four years of work by the EU to bring data protection legislation into line with new, previously unforeseen ways that data is now used. From May 28th next year, any company doing business in the EU will have to be in compliance with the GDPR. This will affect all organisations that hold personally identifiable data on EU citizens, even if the organisation is based outside of the EU.
Currently, the UK relies on the Data Protection Act 1998, which was enacted following the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive (DPA), but this will be superseded by the new legislation. A lot has changed since 1998 in the way that we collect, store and use data. GDPR is more extensive in scope and application than the current DPA. Brexit will not affect the introduction of GDPR according to the Government. British organisations are expected to comply with the new regulations despite Brexit and the implications of the UK leaving the EU. GDPR regulation will also impact overseas as fines may affect almost 80% of US firms. Simply put, if you work with EU citizens, then you must be GDPR compliant.
GDPR jobs have been in high demand during 2017 and will continue to be going into 2018 as businesses start to get to grips with the upcoming legislation that will affect everyone. Whenever new regulation is introduced, the demand for skills and knowledge increases. Implementation of GDPR will require complex business process / practice and software level changes - particularly any company where they process data overseas (even more so if it is outside the EU).
Job titles associated with GDPR include Data Protection Manager/Advisor, Data Manager, Privacy Consultant and Data Governance Manager, Compliance Manager etc. Additionally, there will be opportunities for Project Managers and Change Managers who have strong data management experience. ■
