The ABPI manifesto suggests ring-fencing unspent funds from the levy to create a new ‘Life Sciences Skills Fund’. This could help the UK train and educate workers to fill existing skills gaps in areas like clinical pharmacology, immunology, genomics and bioinformatics - for example, by helping universities and FE colleges offer new courses in those subjects.
Patient access to the latest medicines
Britain’s pharmaceutical industry is committed to helping create an NHS that’s ‘fit for the future’ – and that means using cutting-edge technology to give every patient access to the latest pharmaceuticals and to world-class care and disease prevention.
In 2019, pharma companies signed a Government agreement capping medicine spending growth at 2%. Any excess will be paid back in rebates to the Department of Health and Social Care.
The ABPI manifesto explains why the British pharmaceutical industry believes the next Government should ensure the rebate money is used to fund access and uptake initiatives for new medicines, helping patients access the latest medicines much faster.
