New York Governor Calls for Approval of 90MW South Fork OWF

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo this week proposed to develop up to 2,400 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind power by 2030 capable of powering 1.25 million homes as the state seeks to lead the nation in renewable energy production.

The offshore wind proposal came after the Democratic governor said on Monday that Entergy Corp's 2,069-MW Indian Point nuclear power plant in Westchester County would shut by 2021 and the state planned to replace its power output with renewable and low carbon energy sources.

The offshore wind proposals include Deepwater Wind's 90-MW South Fork project to be built about 30 miles southeast of Montauk that the Democratic governor, in a release, said he wanted the Long Island Power Authority to approve.

Deepwater built the nation's first and only offshore wind farm off Block Island in Rhode Island. It is majority owned by New York investment firm D.E Shaw Group.

Offshore wind is key to meeting Cuomo's Clean Energy Standard goal to meet 50 percent of electricity needs with renewable sources by 2030 in New York,

the second-most-populous U.S. state after California.

Unlike in many European countries, there is only one offshore wind farm operating in the United States at present, Deepwater's 30-MW project off Block Island, which entered service December 2016.

DONG Energy Seeks Taiwan Offshore Wind Growth to Beat Europe’s Tenders

Taiwan has similar geographic conditions as Northern Europe, where the offshore wind developer currently has 3GW of offshore wind installed, and a solid regulatory framework in place which offers visibility for the industry and attracts investments, DONG Energy said.

Among the 36 offshore wind farm sites planned by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), 21 sites are located in the Changhua County.

DONG Energy is currently carrying out a comprehensive environmental impact assessment (EIA) on four of these sites. Provided that the EIAs are approved by the Taiwanese government and subject to investment approvals by the company’s Board of Directors, DONG Energy intends to develop the sites into a total offshore wind capacity of at least 2GW and make a significant investment into Taiwan’s energy infrastructure.

The potential construction of offshore wind farms could start in 2021-2024.

America’s first offshore wind farm entered commercial operation.

Deepwater Wind completed construction on the Block Island wind farm in August. GE Renewable Energy is the project’s turbine supplier, providing the five 6MW Haliade wind turbines. With GE also having a 15-year turbine maintenance contract, the company will cover the repair of the wind turbine number 2.

The turbine failure was discovered during a test run in early November, according to ecoRI news site. Inspection found that the magnets inside the generator were damaged due to a drill bit left behind during the turbine assembly.
