GOING SOLAR

Supermarket giant Lidl is to invest 1 million euros and install 4,364 solar panels at a distribution facility that’s currently being built in Ireland.

Lidl welcomed the grant of planning from Kildare County Council for the installation of energy-saving solar panels at the distribution centre in Newbridge.

The installation will see an investment of €1 million at this site, adding to the €1m already committed by Lidl to solar power installations across its store network. Once installed, the solar panels at the facility will produce over a million kilowatt hours of energy, which is equivalent to powering around 240 homes, not only this it reduces the centres carbon output by around 473 tonnes.

The solar panels will be supplied by Enerpower, a renewable energy business based in Waterford, Ireland. Lidl have said that its new investment and continued investment will mean that one-quarter of its energy requirements in Ireland will come from solar power.

The installation of 4,364 panel’s individual panels on the roof of the distribution centre will make this Irelands largest installation of PV solar panels. The new facility will also have electric cars and charging points, heat recovery technology and LED lighting.

Lidl is one of many supermarkets

that are now looking at installing

more renewable forms of energy.

We predict many more moves like

this to come!
