HORNSEA

Hornsea Project One will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world once completed in 2020. The wind farm is said to have the capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW) which will mean it is the first offshore wind farm to exceed 1 GW in capacity.

Hornsea Project One is located off the Yorkshire coast and will span an area of approximately 407 square kilometres, five times the city of Hull. The wind farm will consist of 174 turbines, each 190 metres tall. The project will be able to produce enough energy to power around one million homes. Construction of the onshore cable route began in late 2016 with the offshore construction beginning in 2018, the Hornsea Project One is expected to be completed by 2021.

Moving on from Hornsea project one, the second stage of the project is due to be completed by 2022. This part is located 89km off the coast of Yorkshire, consisting of up to 300 turbines. When complete, it will meet the electricity needs of over 1.3 million homes per year. With a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts (GW) it will be producing more energy than the Hornsea Project One. Onshore works started in April 2018 with the estimated completion date to be sometime in 2022. The project will help enable the UK to increase their use of renewable energy.

With construction of both Hornsea Project

one and two underway, DONG Energy is

proposing to develop a new offshore wind

farm in the North Sea, 120km off the north

Norfolk coast. They plan to build this

offshore wind farm with a capacity of 2.4

gigawatts (GW) meaning it could well be

the biggest windfarm in the world.

With a capacity of 2.4 GW it will be able

to supply the electricity needs for over

two million homes.

Not only, is Hornsea Project three in discussion, a fourth project is now also being proposed. This windfarm will be approximately 65km off Flamborough Head on the Yorkshire coast, located to the west of Hornsea Project One and Hornsea Project Two. The proposal is to install around 180 turbines which will look to provide a huge amount of clean, renewable energy.

With two huge projects already under way and two being proposed, the Hornsea Projects are not only providing environmental benefit by helping the UK increase their renewable energy use, but it will also provide hundreds of jobs whilst boosting the local economy through supply chain opportunities.

We look forward to seeing the development of the projects and will keep you updated along the way.
