French giants Total will deploy its first autonomous robot to an off-shore oil & gas platform in a world first.

The robot has £4m worth of backers and is designed to execute the jobs that are dangerous and dull for normal human workers.

Initially, the new robot will be deployed in Shetland at Total's gas plant before being tasked out to join 120 workers on the Alwyn platform, north east of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Constructed by Austrian firm Taurob with software from neighboring Germany - the robot should be able to visually inspect and detect gas leaks.

FOR BOT-TER OR FOR WORSE?

Big bucks has been poured into a new satellite that will be launched by 2021, capable of spotting planet warming methane leaks from oil and gas facilities around the world.

The multi-million dollar satellite named MethaneSAT will be launched by the Environmental Defense Fund and will make data of any major leaks public.

Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas that is responsible for approximately one-fifth of climate change.

These measures being put in place to reduce global methane emissions are the biggst thing we can do right now to reduce climate change.
