SPRING AWAKENING With the change of the seasons comes changes on earth and time for renewal and rebalancing in the body. BY JESSICA DANG F or many, spring is one of the most cherished times of the year. The chilly winds of winter slowly blow by, and in comes softer rains, sunnier days and life every- where—from parks to gardens. Based on traditional Chinese medicine, the body deserves its own focus for well-being and health each season. With the renewal of spring comes time for renewal in the body and the Spring Awakening Signature Spa Therapy treatment, customized to bring equilibrium to your mind, body and spirit during this season. ANCIENT RITUALS No matter the season, the Signature Spa Therapy treatment starts with an ancient ritual. “This ritual of washing the feet was taken from nomadic Chinese cultures,” explained massage therapist Jim Patrick as he gently poured warm water over my feet from an elegant basin. “Before travelers entered a home, the youngest of the household was responsible for this ritual to signify the end of a long journey and the beginning of rest.” With a delicate touch, he washed away the wearies of the world and patted my feet dry with a plush towel, gently laying them back down. In a therapy room on the 35th floor at the award-winning The Spa at Manda- rin Oriental, New York, overlooking a glittery view of New York City. The afore- mentioned soothing foot ritual is how every treatment starts here; a version of a welcome, if you will. I leaned back against the pillows on the cushioned bench and relaxed. The chime of the Tibetan cymbals intensified and gradually faded. Mandarin Oriental’s two-hour Signature Spa Therapy is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and the Chinese philosophy of the five elements of nature: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each season commands a different treatment technique and aromatherapy. Ancient rituals begin the treatment. While the chime signified entering a cocoon of relaxation, the experience felt more like a spiritual journey. I couldn’t wait to embark on it and settled under the covers on the massage bed. UNDERSTANDING YOUR ELEMENT The treatment begins with the therapist applying pressure to 14 points along your spine, to which you respond by identifying the points where the most atten- tion is needed. As it turns out, my upper back, shoulder and neck area were the stiffest areas. The spring season is most closely associated with the wood element because it represents upward movement, fresh green growth and new beginnings. “That means you have a lot of wood in your personality,” Patrick explained. “Wood people tend to be driven and have a creative vision. They are natural leaders, great strategists and are good at executing. This treatment will be an excellent way to prepare your well-being for the arrival of spring.” MANDARINORIENTAL.COM/NEWYORK 29
