Career Paths : Blazing New Trails
MORGAN GILBERT ’ 17 , Pharm . D ., BCOP , had a very busy August . After leaving Fort Wayne five years ago , she returned home last August to start a new position as a hematology / oncology clinical pharmacist at Parkview Cancer Institute . She also contributed to research published Aug . 3 , 2022 , in Frontiers in Oncology , “ The role of adjuvant chemotherapy in the management of acute promyelocytic leukemia differentiation syndrome .”
Following her graduation from Manchester , Gilbert completed two years of residency at the University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky , which included a PG1 in pharmacy practice and PG2 in oncology pharmacy . She then worked for three years at Indiana University Health ( IU Health ) as a hematology / stem cell transplant clinical pharmacist before her current position .
After working at IU Health the past three years , my husband and I , who are both from Fort Wayne , made the decision to move back home .” In her current position as an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist her area is hematology . Her responsibilities include ensuring safe and effective treatments are ordered for patients in terms of things like drug-drug interactions , renal / liver dose adjustments , or recent admissions due to chemotherapy . As part of a health care team , she helps decide on best treatment options for patients and answers drug information questions . She also educates patients on their treatment , helping them manage treatment-related side effects to so they can manage compliance with their treatment plan .
“ I also make sure that they are receiving treatment safely and work with the team to ensure this happens for each , and every patient ,” she said .
Gilbert says the best part of her new position is the people she works with in hematology , the Parkview pharmacy team , and her daily patient interactions .
“ Everyone has been extremely welcoming as I navigate this new position and learn how to work EPIC , how clinic functions , and my various responsibilities ,” said Gilbert . “ I am looking forward to working closely with them as I continue to enhance our hematology treatment plans and build new ones .”
As she becomes more established in her role at Parkview , Gilbert says she ’ s also looking forward to precepting students , who might also find this path as rewarding as she does .
ADAM STREBIG ’ 22 , Pharm . D ., pursued a non-traditional pharmacy career path as a clinical trial capabilities associate at Eli Lilly & Company in Indianapolis . Working as part of a team at Lilly ' s corporate center he helps to prepare investigator sites to comply with regulatory standards before starting new Lilly-sponsored trials . This role is interconnected with many other clinical trial-based roles within Lilly . It provides ample opportunity for career and personal growth , which is something that is valued and engrained into the Lilly culture .
“ I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I ' ve had to this point that allowed me to pursue a career where I am supported , valued and actually look forward to going into work each day ,” said Strebig .
“ I wouldn ' t be here if not for the experiences and relationships I made along the way during my time at Manchester .”
