Helen Anne Winger Garber ’ 50

Helen Anne Winger Garber ’ 50 knows that her support for Manchester University is a sound investment . The trustees and President Dave McFadden ’ 82 are “ forward-looking ” and have the best interests of Garber ’ s alma mater at heart , she says . “ We know the money we give will be used carefully .”

A retired teacher , Anne met her husband , Jim , at Camp Mack near Milford , Ind ., shortly after World War II . They married on Dec . 28 , 1947 , and for two years served as house parents in Ikenberry Hall , the former men ’ s residence where Helman Hall stands today .
When they graduated in 1950 , Jim and Anne left North Manchester , living for a while in Elkhart and later in Bloomington where Jim earned his master ’ s degree at Indiana University . Along the way , the Garbers had four children , all of whom would attend Manchester too : Gloria ’ 71 ( pictured at right ), Tim ’ 73 , Chris ’ 77 and Julie ’ 79 .
A job offer in 1962 brought the Garbers and their young family back to Manchester where Jim served in several University leadership posts in public relations , alumni relations and development until his retirement in 1992 .
Now widowed , Anne lives at Timbercrest Senior Living Community in North Manchester . There , she ’ s surrounded by longtime friends from MU who enjoy the connections with each other and with current faculty , staff and students just down the street .
Through the years , Anne has supported the Peace Studies Program , each comprehensive campaign and , of course , The Manchester Fund . Supporting the University is one of her top philanthropic priorities because it ’ s meant so much to her family . A gift to Manchester will be used wisely , she says , and helps current students build the same lifelong connections that she has enjoyed . “ It ’ s in good hands .”
