I spent a lot of time there as a student, climbing stairs and walking the creaky wood floors to classes such as Constitutional Law with Jerry Tucker or Expository and Critical Writing with Charles Klingler ’48. In the how-cool-is-that-category, I could look out my office window at the fountain where, 70 years ago, Dad asked Mom to marry him. This June, my office moved to the third floor of Calvin Ulrey (read more about Mr. Ulrey on Page 38). Alumni of a certain age remember CU as a residence hall and, for a time, home of the Living- Learning Center. My brother lived here in the 1970s and, though I don’t recall his room number, I do know he enjoyed some of his best college times in the building where I write this now. Every day I can look around the North Manchester campus and recall what was. I also look around and see signs of what can be. At Homecoming, we dedicated the new Lockie and Augustus Chinworth Center and broke ground for a new stadium. We are moving forward with a health science initiative, including development of a nursing program (story on Page 8). New degrees in the health sciences will expand ways for our graduates to advance our mission and leave Manchester’s mark on the world.
