In Memoriam
Art Gilbert,
professor emeritus
Art Gilbert, 87, professor emeritus
of accounting, died June 26, 2019. He
graduated from Manchester in 1953
and earned his M.B.A. from Indiana
University in 1954.
Gilbert taught at Manchester from
1958 until his retirement in 1998. He led the growth of accounting
at Manchester and elevated its stature to one of the most-respected
programs in the Midwest.
The Arthur L. Gilbert College of Business is named in his honor.
Graduates who made the cut in Gilbert’s classes went on to
leadership positions in business and industry, public accounting
firms, higher education and other fields.
Among his survivors are his wife, Ellen, and daughter Cathy
Gilbert ’83, a son Jeff Stern-Gilbert ’88, and grandchildren
Kelley Brenneman ’14, Joel Brenneman ’18 and Dinah
Gilbert ’22. A son, Bradley Gilbert ’85 died in 2014.
Lana Groombridge,
professor emerita
Lana Lawver ’66 Groombridge, 74,
professor emerita of exercise and sport
sciences, died Sept. 9, 2019.
Groombridge left an indelible mark on
Manchester as a professor, coach and
athletic director, elevating the status of
women student-athletes and preparing students to teach and coach in
schools across Indiana and beyond.
On the Manchester faculty from 1976 to 2008, Groombridge coached
volleyball, basketball and track and field and served as associate athletic

director. As department chair, she led the transformation of the
physical education program into the Department of Exercise and
Sport Sciences, adding a new fitness and sport management major.
Groombridge earned her master’s degree at Indiana University and
her doctorate at Ball State. She was a member of the Manchester
University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Survivors include her husband Graham, son Greg, and daughter Erin
Groombridge ’01 Eberly.
