Class Notes
1950s Ralph Bailey ’51 of Columbia City, Ind., served as
president of the community’s Old Settlers Day festival.
Wendell ’58 and Marcia Taylor ’59c Dilling of
Midland, Mich., celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary in June. Marcia recently received
the Reece Endeavor Service Award for many
years of volunteering as the photographer for
the nonprofit’s annual GardenWalk fundraiser.
Wendell recently received the Midland Section
American Chemical Society Science Education
Volunteer Award for many years of service in the Central Michigan
University Chemistry Department and other volunteer education
activities. He also was recognized as a 60-year member of the ACS.
1960s
Dean L. Strycker, M.D., ’61 received the 2017 Distin-
guished Service Award from the Indiana Society of Anesthesiologists.
Dr. Strycker practiced anesthesiology in South Bend and Mishawaka
for 33 years, retiring in 2005.
Gary Studebaker ’63 of Anaheim, Calif., has published “The Queen of
Hearts: The Life of Zelma Louise Roth Studebaker,” Second Edition.
Wayne Kreiger ’64 of Columbia City, Ind., was awarded the Virgil
Street Award at the 2018 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association
Clinic. Kreiger coached girls basketball at Columbia City High
School for 33 years and at Canterbury High School for three seasons,
compiling a record of 588-233.
Mike “Doc” Emrick ’68 won his fifth consecutive Sports Emmy
Award on May 8, 2018. This is Emrick’s sixth win in eight years for
Outstanding Sports Personality Play by Play. He leads the National
Hockey League broadcast team for NBC Sports.
1970s Glynn Hines ’73 of Fort Wayne received the
Sagamore of the Wabash, the state’s highest honor.

Janina Traxler ’73, professor emerita of French,
retired in May. She joined Manchester’s faculty in
1979.
Gregory Gray ’74, dean of the chapel and
professor of religion and society at Tuskegee
University in Alabama, delivered the baccalaureate
address this year at the university.
Brad Park ’74 of Goshen, Ind., was inducted into the Indiana Football
Hall of Fame. Park coached at Goshen High School from 1993 to 2002
when the team won 81 games.
Jerry Sweeten ’75, professor emeritus of biology
and former director of the Environmental Studies
Program, retired in May. He joined Manchester’s
faculty in 2004.
Rev. Douglas H. Barber ’76 has retired from
Richvalley United Methodist Church in Wabash,
Ind. He served congregations in the Church of
the Brethren and the United Methodist Church for 38 years.
