Doing the wave
hen in doubt, wave. I learned that when I moved here in 2008. I hadn’t
yet connected names with faces, let alone their vehicles. So when people
drove by and waved as I walked home from work or walked my dogs, I
reciprocated even if I didn’t have a clue who they were. North Manchester
is where I learned to wave to people I don’t know.
Last summer, when I was recovering from surgery, colleagues, neighbors and new friends from a
church I don’t even attend visited me. They brought me chicken, peaches, casseroles, sweet corn,
homemade soup and fresh blueberries. Some mornings I found a bag of home-grown vegetables
tied, anonymously, to my front door. A neighbor mowed my lawn. A colleague’s daughter walked
my dogs.
This is where Jim Sainsbury ’17 and Emily Haecker ’18 are proud to have grown up, and it’s
where they love going to college. It’s where young alumni like Megan Julian ’07 Sarber and
Jody Sarber ’07 are choosing to raise their daughters, Emersyn and Ainsley. It’s where Corey
Brueggeman ’12 and Brittney Wagler ’12 Brueggeman met, fell in love and started their
married lives.

And it’s where MU president Dave McFadden ’82 and his wife Renée ’82 returned to live, work
and raise their children. “I could have lived anywhere,” McFadden has said. “I chose here.”
Students who choose Manchester University often say they fall in love with the hospitality here.
Small-town students find a comfortable familiarity. Big-city students appreciate the safety and
relaxed pace.
No, there’s not a big-box store. I prefer walking these tree-lined streets to the farmers market or
our Victorian downtown and trading with people who live and work here.
I’ll learn their names eventually. In the meantime, we’re doing the wave in North Manchester!
