More than 200 years ago, craftsmen in the woods of New York felled a tree bound for a new barn. The timbers came together and served their purpose for centuries, developing a rich patina as America took shape around them. The posts and beams, each bearing the marks of their builders’ axe strokes, proved durable enough to be transported to Vermont near the start of this millennium. There they served a new purpose as the residence of a builder inspired to shape his home from the land.
When it passed into the hands of its latest owners in 2020, the Midwest natives and longtime Vermont visitors set out to make the inside of their home as stunning as the old barn’ s magnificent westerly view, knowing that it would soon be their full-time residence. The humble couple has asked to remain anonymous and will be referred to here as“ the wife” and“ the husband.”
