were obsolete,” Bob explains.“ Instead of tearing them down, we saw potential.” Bob’ s background also includes work with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and high-profile restoration projects, including Grand Central Terminal. He carries the same value system from his past historic preservation work into his work as a hotelier today.“ We want to respect the integrity of the buildings we work with,” he says.“ And we want the design to reflect the community it’ s in. When you walk in, you should look around and know where you are.”
In 2010, Saltaire redeveloped a distressed Holiday Inn in Provincetown.“ We didn’ t know much about the hotel business at the time,” recalls Bob.“ But we realized we liked it more than other real estate opportunities. Hotels are operating businesses. You get to think about the décor, the food program, the artwork, and the music— all of the details. It’ s fun, and it constantly evolves. It’ s not like building a condo and selling it.”
Their past projects have included properties in Woodstock, Stowe, and Provincetown. Bob shares that it was family ties that originally drew the two of them to Vermont.
“ Carrie’ s sister and brother-in-law have a place in Peru, and my sisters live in Vermont. It’ s a place we gravitate towards, and it’ s a place we care about deeply.” Saltaire’ s model is intentionally lean.“ We keep overhead low by staying hands-on. We direct all aspects of each hotel’ s look, feel, and positioning.” The philosophy is consistent: authenticity over flash, and design rooted in architecture and lived experience.“ The most fulfilling part of it all is meeting people,” says Bob.“ We inherited amazing staff here, and we’ ve welcomed new team members, as well. Seeing the lodge alive again has been incredible.” Carrie sums it all up perfectly:“ It’ s all about creating a place where people can feel at home and truly enjoy and experience exactly where they are.” n
