An Explosive Wedding — in More Ways Than One
Elizabeth Berger convinced her husband Eric to buy an inn so that their children would be with them where they worked . At the time , they were living in Silicon Valley but they had their sights on somewhere out east . They searched in Maine and in New Hampshire , but fell in love with an inn in southern Vermont because of the layout and the opportunities to expand food and beverage service . It also had a place where the owners could live with their family . Three years after they were married , they moved to southern Vermont and officially bought the Arlington Inn in 2002 . At that time , their daughter Katie was 18 months old , and Elizabeth was seven months pregnant with their son Walter . “ The inn was our middle child ,” says Elizabeth .
The inn was originally built as a private village estate in 1847 and then turned into a summer inn in the 1920s that was called the Colonial Inn . There was another inn down the road called the Arlington Inn that burned down in the late-1950s , and so the Colonial Inn took on its name . Today , the Arlington Inn consists of 16 guest rooms within four buildings — the Carriage House , Main House , The Old Parsonage , and a barn .
