The Baptist Church, 4895 Main Street
The Baptist Church, 4895 Main
Street, was built in 1833. A
Gothic revival-style building
(applying the scheme of pointed
arches), the belfry, bell, and vestry
were added much later. The
congregation is older than this
building. The Baptists gathered in
1781, and eventually they raised a
meetinghouse, not a church, that
once stood near Factory Point
Cemetery. In so many of the
vintage photos of Factory Point,
there is a magnificent elm tree
standing between the church and
Wait Block. It was in the road,
where the brick circle is now, and

a brick building built in 1837 as
a general store, look for large
letters on the glass above the
door. This was the Combination
Cash Store Company starting in
the early 1900s, and the letters
give us one small hint about the
building’s history.
