CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.1
CONCLUSION
With over 50 years of oil exploitation, thousands of NORM contamination tools
have been generated. In the past, NORM Waste generation during oil and gas
activities in Nigeria has not been handled optimally in all cases with respect to
health, safety, and environmental (HSE), Radiological pollution of the area
which could be detrimental to the health of the oil workers and the general
public as continuous exposure can lead to build up of radionuclide in the body
which could lead to cancer and other related sicknesses.
However now, effective solutions to these problems in terms of what measures
must be put in place, are prescribed by the regulatory frameworks both at the
national and international level to curb these menace and to ensure planning and
management of the NORM waste produced during oil and gas activities in the
Nigeria petroleum industry.
Environmental remediation is urgently needed in many of the aged petroleum
contaminated sites, where land use may be changing from petroleum production
to residential, agricultural and recreational uses in the future. Therefore,
effective understanding of radioactive waste management and associated
environmental degradation is importance for developing sustainable strategies
