Eva Rolle:
Boxing Chief
& Iron Lady of
Maltese Boxing
To those involved in boxing at the professional level Eva Rolle needs no introduction. Recently Eva took over the helm of Maltese boxing and immediately made an impact on the local scene. Her no nonsense stance on several issues sent a strong message to the local boxing circles that the time of playing is over and that boxing is a serious business. ‘Malta Boxing News” caught up with Malta’s newest boxing chief at ‘The Bugibba Hotel’ for a chat.
MBN: Eva, your passion for boxing, how did it all start?
Eva: I got involved in boxing through one of my sons and an amateur boxing program, it quickly took over my life, now it is beyond being a passion – “I live boxing” – my family is a boxing family, boxing is our trade and profession.
MBN: How did you end up getting involved in Maltese Boxing?
Eva: It was by chance, some years ago my son Robert cam to Malta for a short holiday, he returned to Germany enthusiastic about what he had seen and so I decided to come and have a look for my-self. As is customary with me I met the local people involved in boxing and I became attached to the Island and the local boxing scene.
MBN: What is the future of Malta in the international boxing scene?
Eva: Malta is most definitely an ideal venue for international title fights, regarding the level of the local boxers, there is plenty of raw talent but attitudes must change greatly if progress and results are to be obtained outside of the Island.
MBN: An example of the changes you refer to?
Eva: Well the approach towards training must be more serious. Maltese boxers must train and prepare for three minute rounds. The present system of training and boxing in the ring in two minute rounds is very amateur. In reality this is amateur boxing without the head-guard.
MBN: The Malta Boxing Council – The future?
Eva: The Malta Boxing Council is the future of Maltese professional boxing. Through this council it will be possible for those boxers who want to box at the higher international levels of boxing to do so.
MBN: Apart of boxing in Malta are you involved with other organizations?
Eva: I am also the CEO for the German Boxing Association and I work very closely with the IBF, but my priority is the MBC and the development of the boxers, official and promoters to the highest international standards.
MBN: Thank you Eva for your time.
Eva: Thank you and Malta Boxing News
