If this sounds preposterous let us test the theory . Turkey , whose territory once stretched to the outskirts of Vienna is classified as in Asia while Georgia which is wholly to the east of Turkey is classified as European .
But what takes the cake , is the fact that Russia , the bulk of whose territory is in Asia , actually stretching all the way to the pacific east coast is placed in the continent of Europe , apparently after a United Nation reclassification .
This is not the only incidence of Europeans creating imaginary demarcation lines to preserve their supremacy . Wherever European colonists arrived in new lands they drew imaginary lines called boundaries and declared them countries .
In these imaginary countries resided numerous tribal groups that had nothing in common apart from the fact that they were geographical neighbors who cooperated or fought for control of the available resources .
The imaginary boundaries were in reality nonsensical as they cut across various linguistic groups and , in most cases , separating consanguine groups into separate countries with at times different colonial masters .
This worked perfectly in the divide and rule strategy but the government of the new formed countries needed to communicate clearly with its subjects to ensure that they
obeyed the laws and other social norms . This is where language came into play .
The colonizers totally ignored the local languages as indicative of primitiveness and superimposed theirs as the lingua franca and were in effect the languages of instruction in schools , the languages of religious practice and the languages of administration .
At this level the process of assimilation was already in progress and by cutting off cultural ties and social order , the new language speaker identifies with the new master and social mobility was determined by the new imported norms .
The Europeans greatest success in the new colonies was actually the mental colonization . They undermined the Africans sense of self-worth and the resultant self-loathing was created by clever use of language .
So , our kings became chiefs and since the lowest rank in the colonial administration was the village chief , linguistically , African leaders were equivalent to the lowest rank in the colonial hierarchy . Collaborating leaders were elevated to the rank of paramount chief .
Our fathers , who worked in the colonial households , were called house boys and our mothers house girls . The whole family and by extension the whole tribe was reduced to the status of children and even their children called our fathers and mothers boys and girls .
