The Proverbial Ten Thousand Hours Genius Strike : Myth Or Truth ?

It is generally and widely said that for one to succeed at anything then they have to put in at least ten thousand hours . How do we debunk this to be true or just a myth ? What about those professionals who have plied their trade for donkey years and are yet to be promoted or grow as sector leaders in their respective trades ? Who determines the ten thousand hours ? How are the ten thousand hours marked ? What metric is used to evaluate this ?
Is it a quantity check off or a detailed qualitative summation ? Where are we taught how to plan for and account for the ten thousand hours ? There are more questions that can arise from this block statement .
I attempt to answer some of these but specifically share the journey we all are on to be the very best in what we do . Courting success by pursuing good governance over self and employing the best project management tactics in all we do as individuals and as leaders in our respective places of work .
The Lion King movie is interesting as it illustrates different characters separate journeys of discovery and dreams realisation . Simba ’ s journey in the said movie is one riddled with ambushes treacherously plotted and thwarted in dramatic twists and turns that make the movie a thriller . Simba is born to the Lion King as the heir designate to the entire Animal Kingdom in that territory . As he grows , playful and protected by the parents oblivious to the heavy burden of his heir designate title and the responsibility that comes with it ; that very title attracted acclaim as much as hatred .
Pumba and Timon are goodwill friends and staunch supporters the of Lion King . Their friendship takes Simba through a journey of self-discovery and mastery . Of course , their mischievousness and playfulness brings out the much-needed flair in the story . The pitfalls of childhood innocence sharpens Simba ’ s skills as it adds to his field knowledge first hand . He grows stronger and bolder from life ’ s hard knocks .
Through all the plays , flips and bloops vital life lessons are learnt and the jest of life is experienced . Though the outstanding lessons and growth are learnt from life ’ s blows , suffering at treacherous ambushes by enemies of progress to Simba ’ s accession to his rightful inheritance . What comes out clear is that the things Simba took for granted did cost him and held him vulnerable as he faced jeopardy at the hands of his aggressors . Simba would not have

Simba grows , earns fortitude from his wounds , becomes resilient and a worthy heir through the thin and thick of life ’ s squeezes . Ultimately , he learns how to roar , stand his ground , gain respect and build good relations in the kingdom . Simba learnt early enough not to be a cry baby and developed muscle to stand up to bullies . Surprisingly , Simba ’ s strength is not drawn from careless exploits but more from restraint and having boundaries in his leadership journey .
Purpose & Cause
The journey of the proverbial ten thousand hours starts when you can clearly define who you are . What it is that you are passionate about ? What values do you stand for ? Can you detail your purpose ? Is it your personal cause or adopted ? Are you a pioneer or cobuilder in what you are passionate about ?
Simba had to be told but more importantly is that he had to know it for himself . Associate with and internalise the call of the purpose and or cause . Once we have clarity of purpose then we can start mobilizing the required resources to realize it . The motivation spur and unwavering determination stems from the intricacies and finite details of this clarity of purpose .
Once one is convinced , they need no push , and they will marshal many others to buy into the cause . No amount of frustration or situational disadvantages can dissuade them otherwise . They become firebrands and light up others along their path for the cause . This forms one ’ s statement of purpose . The vision and mission are born at this stage .
