How can you work on telling the truth ? The information manipulation theory requires that if any of the 4 parameters are breached then you are setting out to deceive your recipient .
• Quantity : Give out full information and do not omit anything
• Quality : Give the correct information
• Relation : Give information that is relevant to the situation
• Manner : Give the information in a way that people understand it easily .
Therefore , omitting information , telling untruths , and confusing people is all part of lying . Does this sound like anyone you know ?
Dorcas is a student who has recently purchased a laptop . She was told the laptop is very stable and can handle lots of graphics work . Two weeks after using it , she realizes that it hangs every time she tries to use design software to create some work . Dorcas has been hit by the expectancy violations theory which says that when expectations are not met , an expectancy violation occurs . This takes the person by surprise .
Dorcas may have a further expectation that she can return the machine and get one that meets her requirements . When the seller declines to do so , Dorcas is upset because she thought the right thing for the seller to do was to address her complaints and concerns . When the seller refuses to take any further action , Dorcas goes through the expectancy violation again .
Of course , any marketer worth their salt will tell you that customer experience is a secret weapon in any business and ensuring the customer ’ s expectations are met is critical . Therefore , ensure that you set low expectations so that you can not only meet the expectations but always exceed them .
While researching for this piece , I came across a TikTok video of a young couple out on a first date , sharing a slice of Pizza between them . As they got to know each other better , they asked each other what they do . The gentleman said he was a Petroleum Transfer Engineer , with the lady saying she was a Finance Exchange Officer .
Can you decipher what work the two individuals actually did ? The Petroleum Transfer Engineer was actually a fuel attendant at a petrol station , while the Finance Exchange Officer was a cashier .
The world of lies can mutilate your brand reputation as it ruins your personal relationships , your ties with loved ones , your professional networks , and the society at large . Before you engage in a lie , stop to ask yourself if the impact of your lies will affect others positively or negatively . Would you want to be lied to ?
