Every one of us has had the opportunity to witness a creative work that leaves us in awe . It could be a famous painting like the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci , or music composition like Beethoven ’ s Fifth Symphony , writing works like those of William Shakespeare , etc . We have a deep admiration for such people and in many ways , they create their own celebrity status through their works . It ’ s easy to look at a creative piece of work and judge its creativity . What most people don ’ t understand is what it takes to be creative .

Creativity is an enigma . Some believe that creativity is assigned to some and not others . Some believe that ‘ creative people ’ are in the arts fields e . g ., in Kenya we have the ‘ Creative Industry ’ which generally consists of musicians , artists , designers , writers , etc . Some believe that creativity is a floating halo that discriminately settles atop some . Some are of the idea that creative people only come from a certain place . All these beliefs are untrue ; everyone has the potential for creativity . We are all unique and when we pursue that which best suits us , we are best in a position to pursue our creative expressions .

Every field of specialization requires creativity . The musician who composes songs is no more creative than the scientist who discovers a breakthrough treatment for an ailment . Creativity has the attributes of uniqueness , originality , novelty , out of the ordinary and atypical .

It ’ s difficult to say exactly what creativity is ; it encompasses many facets and as such it ’ s probably easier to break down each facet separately : Creativity is discovering or bringing something new into existence ; Creativity is discovering how to use existing things or methods in new ways .

Though taken for granted now , some things have been discovered that have changed the course of human history such as the wheel , fire , the toilet , the computer , the microscope , the internet , amongst others . Creativity is not limited to such great works ; there are little things that happen around us every day that we can judge as creative .

It is my trust that the tips I share here-in will help boost creativity at a time when creativity is an imperative to not just thrive but survive .

The creative is passionate about what he / she does

Passion , excitement , or drive are the factors that push people to be creative . Passion allows us to push through the uncomfortable places to arrive at a solution . It also allows us to get to flow defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi as “ a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter ; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost , for the sheer sake of doing it .” In a world filled with distractions and yet still so hungry for creativity , sticking through a tough assignment and staying focused on it is priceless . It ’ s best to pursue passion ; even for the individual doing a job they don ’ t particularly enjoy , there are aspects in which joy can be found and therein lies the capacity for passion .

The creative is faced with a problem

Whether it ’ s Archimedes trying to figure out how to determine the volume of an indefinite object or Isaac Newton comprehending gravitational force , the creative mind always poses questions ( problems ) and does not rest till it finds a solution . A little child always asks why , how , how come , etc ., and at times we find such behavior irritating without appreciating the fact that it ’ s this kind of curiosity that has
