A host of unforced mistakes have brought to light the naked fact that there is a huge difference between populism and the running of a government . The spates of arrogant roadside declarations that have had to be retracted give an impression of an amateurish team .
virus spreading still around China ?
The Chinese people are starting to openly defy the government on what they see as ultra-oppressive measures in the containment of the virus . The government is stealthily but surely cracking down on the free enterprise economic model that the government had allowed to flourish .
In the background , Xi Jinping , the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party has been quietly consolidating his autocratic power and has won an unprecedented third term . The term limit was put in place to avoid a return to dictatorship .
A shift towards an autocratic rule and the immense power that China has garnered as an economic powerhouse , presently the second largest economy in the world , should be making the world a very nervous place as China is not known to be coy in bullying weaker nations .
This geo-political shift in power is worrisome in that China is a main player in African politics and is presently the main development partner of choice for many African countries who profess democratic ideals but are in bed with a communist leaning country .
This is happening just when democracy , as a political system , is undergoing its biggest challenge , precipitated by extreme right nationalistic sentiments that found expression in the unfortunate and highly divisive Trump presidency .
Trump not only refused to concede defeat and encouraged an insurrection by election deniers , which dented the credibility of democratic institutions but continued to have an inordinate influence in the Republican Party creating an ideological schism and party infighting .
Trumpism had taken root in the Republican Party and Trump was only too happy to goad the right wing politicians into an aggressive and militant faction that was threatening the very existence of democracy and the American global influence as the defender of democratic ideals .
Emboldened by the fanatical support of his vocal followers , Trump positioned himself as the kingmaker in the party and he set out to punish those that did not support his conspiracy theories as traitors to America and his endorsement was sought as prominent politicians were sidelined as Anti-Trump .
The mid-terms of 2022 were supposed to be

the crowning event of the Trump influence and he timed his announcement to run in 2024 at the end of the mid-terms , on the momentum to be created by the anticipated mid-term victories .
But 2022 proved that Biden was not as weak a president as previously assumed and more importantly Trump was not as influential as he thought . These mid-terms were a huge letdown for Republicans and the Trump announcement was lackluster devoid of the anticipated impact .
The overturning of Wade vs Roe in June 2022 by the Supreme Court , a longstanding constitutional right to abortion energized a moribund Democratic Party with new verve that successfully staved off the anticipated red wave that was going to sweep America .
The waning American global political influence , occasioned by the insular but shortsighted America First Trump policy alienated America ’ s European allies at a time when The United Kingdom copied the American example with the ill-advised Brexit under a scandal ridden government led by Boris .
The chain of events sparked by the Brexit and the Covid pandemic were to oust Boris from power in 2022 at a most importune time in the history of The United Kingdom . The acrimonious Brexit had given rise to nationalistic tendencies in both North Ireland and Scotland .
As if the self-inflicted turmoil caused by Brexit was not enough , in 2022 , the longest serving British monarch , Queen Elizabeth II passed on bringing to a close a remarkable era that saw the British Empire transition into a stable commonwealth under the capable and astute guidance of the Queen .
The matriarch had ruled the royal family with a firm hand and she had garnered respect from both foe and friend and hers was a monarchy that was not questioned as she commanded both respect and admiration from within England and abroad .
Hardly had she been buried than the rumblings of dissent were beginning to hum as the countries in the British dominion reevaluated whether they wished to remain under the monarchy and the Britons began to question the legitimacy of the royal family .
The ascension to power of Charles III does not excite the Britons , who still blame him for the death of their favorite Princess Diana , whose popularity seems to increase as a result of a combination of the personality of the present queen consort and the myth of Diana .
The stature of the Queen was such that she could ignore and get away with the scandals in the royal household , but Charles III is not as lucky as he is part of the main scandal , not helped by a wayward sibling and a rebellious son married to an American .
The monarchy is on shaky ground and the conservative party is on an even shakier ground . Without one to stabilize the other during these challenging economic times , the future of The United Kingdom seems uncertain at best and perilous at worst .
They say that extraordinary situations call for extraordinary measures and that is what the conservative party was trying to deal with when Prime Minister Truss got into office but her quick fix measures threw the country into an economic whirlpool .
She managed to write history as the shortest serving prime minister in the English history and helped to rewrite an even more astonishing one as The United Kingdom ushered in their first prime minister of Indian origins , Rishi Sunak .
The real genesis of the economic meltdown in UK was caused by the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 . The invasion disrupted the global cereal supply chain which was already strained by the pandemic aftermath .
The invasion which Putin blamed on the
