many things call for equal attention in the operational madness of the day-to-day life of a manager . There are meetings to attend , payment approvals to make , emails to read and respond to , emergencies to react to , and other operational and tactical activities that inform a day in the office . We often get strategies right but fail to reach the goals due to ineffective implementation .
Clarity of mind commands that you are conscious of how you allocate and spend time in the day to operationalize strategy . As a senior manager , these daily and tactical activities should take less than a quarter of your time and the rest of the time reserved for actioning vital strategic goals . If ignored , time is wasted attending to actions , which might appear significant , but contributing nothing to set and agreed goals .
A food company that I am consulting for here in Australia needed a strategic direction , and we identified four critical goals for growth : Launch five new products ( product development ), open four new markets ( Market development ), Establish two new channels to the market ( Channel development ), and to create two new business units . But going there after six months , nothing much had been done towards achieving these goals , even though managers were always busy doing some work .
I realized the managers were unclear about how their daily activities contributed to
“
Clarity of mind is the ability to vividly understand the magnitude of the goal and what needs to get done to achieve and sustain it . Goal clarity is being aware of the importance of that goal to the overall company performance and its weight relative to other corporate objectives .
the four identified goals . So , we started by analyzing our day-to-day activities and how they relate to achieving those fundamental goals . Every meeting we attended , we had to ask ourselves if it had anything to do with these four key goals . If not , we would not participate ; by doing so , we created clarity and focus on activities geared towards achieving our goals .
Seek clarity in the review stage by appraising tasks at the beginning of every month , week , and day , for strategic alignment . Also , set weekly objectives and specific actions to execute each key goal . To gain some confidence , set simple steps toward each goal , and eventually , what may look like a vast and unsurmountable task becomes feasible and possible . And at the end of the day , week , month , and year review how much got achieved . Also , identify the lowlights and action the setbacks .
Your mind is evident in your purpose when you remove clutter from your paths . So , clarity of mind is about being aware of where you are and where you want to go . Then , lucidly identifying plausible pathways to your goals . Scanning and analyzing relevant information in your environment clothes your strategy with sturdy armor . The ability to see how your actions gradually come together to achieve goals helps to keep your steps on the right path . Finally , staying focused on the small daily bites into this elephant , makes you a giant conqueror .
So , next time you walk into that meeting , put on this whole armor , and thank me later .
