On Digital Elections
2020 is the year the world changed as it grappled with the novel virus corona in an epidemic that stumped scientists and introduced draconian safety measures that had far reaching effects on world travel , commerce and the way people worked .
The vulnerability of the human species was exposed as many countries helplessly watched their compatriots die as the overburdened health systems battled to contain the spread of the virus and countries panicked as economic activity collapsed .
What was also significant was that a viable vaccination solution to the problem was met with such ferocious opposition with wild conspiracy theories abounding and amazingly there were millions willing to die rather than be vaccinated which beat all logic .
The repercussion of that obstinacy is that we now have a sizable portion of the world population that is unvaccinated and they have unwittingly made it more difficult to control the virus but they are also unable to travel to many global destinations due to their choice .
On that dramatic background one may easily forget that that was also the year that Donald Trump dealt democracy a mortal blow by refusing to concede an election he so clearly lost and using his personal influence in the Republican Party tried to overthrow the government on the infamous Jan 6th incidence .
That Trump had the grandiose ambitions of a third world country despot was very clear during his term but he found that the democratic institutions that exist in America did not allow him to run the country on his whims and he set about to dismantle democracy .
He abdicated his role as the world ’ s chief cop for democracy by withdrawing his support for America ’ s international obligations . He reneged on NAFTA and withdrew support for NATO while publicly endorsing traditional foes of democracy , Russia and North Korea .
He fortuitously managed to pack the Supreme Court with conservative judges with the singular intention that they would support his agenda hence destroying the perceived independence of the highest court in America and a vital tenet of democracy which is the separation of powers in government .

Since Kenyans are in the curious position where the government is fighting itself , it is very difficult to tell who is telling the truth and who is lying . This may turn out to be a good thing since the political class is busy eating itself up and making the voter wiser to the machinations of the system .
