Learning agility is the key to unlocking your change proficiency and succeeding in an uncertain , unpredictable and constantly evolving environment , both personally and professionally .
Only by continually challenging our own best thinking , inviting others to play devil ’ s advocate on our assumptions and interrogating our thinking - can we do the requisite unlearning and relearning to make smarter decisions as we navigate unchartered ground ahead .
When we look back at the last ten years , the ubiquitous nature of mobile phones , access to fast internet , pervasive adoption of technology , and the unmistakable influence of social media have changed the game . It ’ s not just technology that has changed social constructs , careers have been swept through a massive revolution . In the past months , many new concepts of what we termed as our normal lifestyle have evolved . For most of us the office as we know it has changed , you only need a computer and internet source and you will be good to go .
In my perspective , we need to unlearn a lot of things … Unlearn how we manage , motivate and lead people remotely ; Unlearn how we approach growth opportunities ; Unlearn how we communicate about our brand ; Unlearn who our target market is , what they want and value ; Unlearn the skills we think are sufficient to get to the next level
Relearning
Relearning can be more accurately described as refocused learning . Regaining knowledge of the material that has been learned and forgotten . There is a common saying that you can never forget how to ride a bicycle once you know how to . Could the same principle be applied to our education system ? We undertake many courses from nursery school to university but end up with more in theory than applications .
To be good at what we do we need to take a step backwards and reexamine what we once knew . Take that old book you studied in college , what are the new developments in your line of work , how has technology affected what you studied , what are the new trends ? Are there any changes in legislation ? What is the nexus between theory and practice ?
If you are given a KCPE mathematics
paper right now , how would you perform ? What if you were given three months to prepare ?
It is , therefore , necessary to actively review the information we have noted or heard through training to enhance , reorganize , strengthen and make them easier to retrieve .
We have all probably heard this phrase : “ We have always done it that way .” Many individuals who feel knowledgeable have a certain amount of this mentality in play . They look back frequently at the past and look forward timidly at the future . They wish for the “ good old ’ days .
We need to build change-ready cultures that can learn , unlearn , and relearn to keep up with the wants , needs , and desires of our customers . One thing that Covid-19 has taught us is that the environment we are operating in is very fluid .
