numbers did not quite show you.
That may be one of the more important reasons to leave room for experimentation. When we allow ourselves to test, we create opportunities not only to discover what works, but also to discover what we did not know we were missing.
Where AI Fits
It would be difficult to talk about creativity, experimentation and making mistakes today without mentioning the tool now sitting on the desks of many marketers.
Generative AI has made experimentation much easier. We can generate several campaign ideas, test headlines, challenge an assumption or turn a rough thought into a prototype in minutes. Used well, it reduces some of the friction that comes with the blank page and makes it easier to try, adjust and try again.
Research increasingly suggests that AI can improve the creativity of individual outputs. At the same time, there is a caution worth paying attention to. When many people rely on the same tool for their ideas, those ideas can begin to look increasingly alike. For marketers, that distinction matters.
AI can be a great thinking partner, but it 07 MAL74 / 26 ISSUE should not become the person doing the thinking. Use it to stretch an idea, challenge your assumptions, explore possibilities and help turn a rough thought into something you can work with. It cannot replace the original spark.
That comes from paying attention. It comes from understanding your customer, your market and your culture. It comes from noticing what others have overlooked, learning from the campaign that did not work and asking questions that do not have obvious answers.
The tools may help us generate faster. They may help us experiment more cheaply and polish our thinking more quickly. Originality, however, still begins with a person who is curious enough to notice something, brave enough to put an imperfect idea on the table and willing to ask,“ What if?”
The Gift...
Mistakes are costly but they also teach us something about ourselves, our work and the kind of professional we are becoming. A mistake can reveal a gap in our knowledge, redirect our careers or lead us to an idea we may never have discovered if everything had gone according to plan.
The goal is not to become careless or lower the bar for excellence. It is to become better at navigating the space between excellence and experimentation.
For marketing professionals, this matters because our work is built around trying to understand people, testing ideas and responding to what we discover. We will not always get it right. The question is whether we are willing to learn from what does not work, speak up when something feels off and give ourselves and others enough room to try again.
When we become too afraid to be wrong, we also become too afraid to discover something new. Perhaps that is the real gift of getting it wrong. It reminds us that we are still learning, still growing and, in many ways, still becoming.
