The family does not merely buy the final product. It pays to become eligible to buy it. That is the marketing insight. The strongest business models do not just reduce customer acquisition cost. They create products, services and partnerships that generate revenue while the customer is still being acquired.

The Best Marketing Model In Africa May Be Hiding In Plain Sight
Most marketers think about customer acquisition as a cost. You spend money on advertising, content, sales teams, distribution and incentives. You hope the lifetime value of the customer eventually exceeds the cost of acquiring them.
But the international education industry operating in Africa has built something far more powerful: A customer-acquisition journey that generates revenue at almost every stage. Instead of paying the full cost of acquiring the customer, the education ecosystem gets African families to finance much of the acquisition process themselves. This is more than low customer acquisition cost. It is Revenue Per Acquisition: turning the acquisition journey itself into a revenue-generating product.
How the model works
An African family enrols its child in an international private school offering a British, American, French or International Baccalaureate curriculum. The family pays for the child to learn the destination market’ s language, follow its curriculum, take its examinations, adopt its educational standards, receive foreign-university counselling, prepare and submit overseas applications, and develop an aspiration to study abroad.
By the time the student applies to a university in London, Toronto, Paris, New York or
Sydney, much of the traditional customer-acquisition work has already been completed. The student has been identified, educated, qualified and prepared for conversion. And who paid for this process? The customer’ s family.
The funnel looks like this: International school fees foreign curriculum standard ized examinations university counselling- overseas admission tuition and living expenses.
At almost every stage, someone in the education ecosystem earns revenue. The school earns fees. The examination body earns registration revenue. The language-testing provider earns testing revenue. The application platform earns fees. The education agent may earn a commission. The visa-processing ecosystem earns fees. The university earns tuition. The destination economy earns revenue from housing, food, insurance, transportation and consumption. This is not simply a recruitment funnel. It is a fully monetized customer journey.
From Customer Acquisition Cost to Reve-nue Per Acquisition
A conventional business pays to move a prospect through its funnel: Awareness consideration qualification conversion. The international education industry has found ways to charge the customer through out that same journey: Paid preparation- paid qualification- paid application- paid conversion- paid retention.
The university may still incur recruitment and marketing costs. But compared with most industries, it receives an unusually qualified customer- often with demonstrat-
