The FIFA motto that‘ Football Unites the World’ is an interesting slogan for a game that seems to elicit nationalistic passions of the highest order with players and devotees pitting against each other on the pitch, in the stands and on the streets with equal zeal.
World Cup co-hosting partners, Mexico and Canada which are a direct consequence of Trump’ s bulldozing tactics.
The Mexican friction is a multi-front political and economic conflict created by US imposed trade policies caused by Trump’ s ignoring existing trade pacts and his insistence that the US has supply chain oversight over Mexico, obviously a no-go zone for national sovereignty.

Trump also picked a fight with Mexico over border control and security, accusing Mexico for soaring crime rate in the US plus the traditional immigration issues have been exacerbated by the ICE anti-immigration unit revamped by Trump.
Trump has reserved for himself the unilateral power to pursue deemed US enemies, especially drug lords, right into Mexico hence rubbishing all internationally recognized protocols for dealing with cross border incidences. issues have been exacerbated by the ICE anti-immigration unit revamped by Trump.

More surprising is the US tension with its traditional close ally Canada who Trump threatened to annex as the fifty-first state thereby sparking a real antipathy from the Canadian citizens who were not in a mood to tolerate Trump’ s bullying.
The Canadian issues are basically centered on escalating trade wars that have been sparked by the US reneging on existing trade agreements causing aggressive tariff disputes accompanied by retaliatory actions and non-agreement on key economic sectors.
The tensions reached absurd levels when Trump actually threatened to raise tariffs on Canada in response to wild fires engulfing Canada which Trump claims are polluting the American air and Canada should be held responsible.
Getting back to the tournament proper, it was administrative chaos, qualified teams were denied visas to enter the US and in one particular poignant case a FIFA selected referee was denied a Visa to officiate in the World Cup supposed to bring people together.
The whole tournament was marred by thinly veiled accusations that it was manipulated and designed to have a predetermined outcome. FIFA has over the years been accused of massive corruption but this tournament took the cake.
A major breach of FIFA rules took place when a red card match suspension for the US team was reversed on the strength of a Trump intervention to the FIFA president which put to question FIFA’ s claimed independence and proved perceived partiality.
Another interesting twist to the tournament was when Trump in the middle of the ongoing games ordered his Treasury Secretary to cut off all trade with Spain whom he termed as a‘ wasted cause’ and a‘ terrible partner’ as Spain withheld airspace access for war with Iran.
As fate would have it, Spain were the eventual World Cup winners and Trump was at hand to present the trophy to the loathed partner and embarrass himself as he remained onstage for the ultimate victor’ s celebration. Spain promptly edited him out of the photo.
It is safe to say that FIFA was playing to political realities of the day and therefore not only created a fake peace prize to appease Trump’ s injured ego, who still maintains he deserved the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.
How does a person that has gone to war with Iran, threatened to annex countries including Canada, Greenland and Cuba, failed to end the Ukraine and Gaza wars, abducted the Venezuelan president ever imagine mentioning his name and peace in the same sentence?
So, the FIFA president created a toy to placate the leadership of a primary host nation and to maintain favorable relations. The lack of a transparent public nomination process makes the prize a personal tool of political diplomacy and not a structured human rights award. If the world has suspected FIFA of shadowy operations and in some cases of outright sportswashing then it is doubly ironic that they should issue a peace prize that distracts from the important discussion on human rights, unethical and criminal activity.
Trump’ s record on human rights is appalling including internally in the US, he is an indicted felon with cases still pending in the judicial system and his numerous mentions in the still unreleased Epstein files caps his unethical mien.
He has been labeled as probably the most corrupt president the US has ever had and his overt grifting has not only enriched himself, his family and his close cronies but his cynical assault on democracy will be felt for decades to come.
That such a person should be the recipient of a FIFA peace prize is not only a mockery of the word peace but a reaffirmation and a reminder that power corrupts and absolute power, that he has diligently sought, corrupts absolutely.
It would be very interesting to see the person who would be vain enough to accept the next FIFA award after the prize has been tarnished by being offered to the most underserving person who is both a charlatan and a war monger.
Perhaps FIFA just gambled that it has four years in which to burnish its image before the next World Cup and that football, which means a different sport in the US, will outlast the current egotistical US cult leader who confuses diplomacy with thuggery.
