Donald Trump however was not as graceful in his defeat . He used his platform to spread lies and incite an insurrection against the government of the United States . It was this act of incitement to insurrection that led to him becoming the first president in the history of the United States to be impeached twice . He also refused to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden as president .
Not all that look tough on the outside have the capacity and inner strength to be objective . Lack of objectivity in leadership is the breeding ground for dictatorships and toxic work environments where ‘ Yes Men ’ are born . Winston Churchill popularly said that the key to his success was that he surrounded himself with people who were more intelligent than him . How did he know they were more intelligent ? He had created an environment where their intelligence could find expression . They were not gagged and bound to accept everything that he said or wanted .
Barack Obama in his best selling memoir - A Promised Land also reveals that many times he was overridden by better and more intelligent arguments from his team members . He had the capacity to be objective . He was able to take the argument and weigh it against his own arguments in the light of the greater good and was able to objectively concede to the superior argument .
Apple founder Steve Jobs said that we should not hire intelligent people so we can tell them what to do but rather so that they can tell us what to do . To be a successful leader you need to be objective enough and humble enough to accept the fact that you do not know everything , that you are not always right .
Great leadership happens when you create an environment of greatness and this is only made possible by having a culture where everyone ’ s voice can be heard . Ownership is one of the top attributes of organizations with a strong performance culture and the fastest way to achieve this is when leaders are objective enough to create an environment where people know that their voices mean something in the organization . No matter how strong you look in public , your true strength is going to be revealed by your objectivity .
As a new crop of people take up leadership positions in Kenya there is no better time than now to become the leader you could have been . It is time to accept that there are indeed people who know more than you and who will be willing to help you to succeed if only you will give them the opportunity by creating the culture of objectivity . You will never really know how great you can be until you are strong enough and humble enough to be objective .
As a leader you must be fully aware of the fact that Your gifts and affiliations can open doors for you and get you to the top but at the end of the day your legacy will be defined not by your gift but by your character . Yes , it is character that sustains gifts . The character to sustain your success is developed through the process of becoming successful .
The process is what builds character and the process includes oscillating periods of highs and lows . Those who compromise themselves out of the lows will never be able to handle the grace and dignity that should come with the highs . Whatever you compromise to get , you will ultimately lose .
Short term compromise is the factory where long term failure is manufactured . Those who compromise values for ambition will lose both . Once people in leadership esteem position over values , failure is the imminent end result . Finally , remember that every entity rises and falls on its leadership .
