On the curse of the Peace Prize

The
Nobel Peace Prize is of particular interest to Kenyans because one of us , Prof . Wangari Maathai won the prize and in the citation it stated that she won it due to her work in promoting sustainable development , democracy and peace .
She was an avid conservationist and environmentalist and she did not hesitate to take the political class head on when she believed that their actions were detrimental to the environment and endangered the biosafety of the future generations .
As expected , she had a great deal of run-ins with the powers that be and through her green belt movement she was able to marshal international support to put a halt to predatory economic projects that threatened our forest cover and biodiversity .
But the conferment of the prize did not mean she had won the battle , we think it was conferred to pinpoint a tinder point which needed to be watched . There are still many fights with the political class concerning environmental protection .
Currently there are multiple cases in court all over Kenya because of the attempts to destroy the riparian land mainly because of greed and the many more dubious schemes to allocate natural resources to shady investors who are clearly out to rape the land .
At the peak of her popularity Wangari Maathai was fighting one government bent on ignoring all science and compromising our environment . Today we have forty seven additional county governments all competing to outdo each other on environmental damage .
We hived off national park land to build a railway to nowhere , we are building an expressway and associated road networks that have decimated the count of mature trees and recreation parks , we are upgrading a sewage system that suspiciously chooses wooded land as pathways .
We are actually worse off on the environmental index from the time that Wangari won the award and it seems that since she won the award , the international community seems to think Kenyans were reformed given that we even host UNEP .
The biggest casualty however is democracy , Kenya has had a series of contested elections which are touted as stolen . Our democratic institutions seem to have www . kinda . co . ke www . kinda . co . zm
