Adverse effects of alcohol in the body can either be acute , ( taking place within a short period of time ) or chronic ( taking place with long standing abuse of alcohol ).

This is because of increased insulin production by the body . There can also be acute pancreatitis which may lead to death , depression of brainstem ( this is the region housing vital centres which control breathing among others ) with risk of death from respiratory failure , or vomiting and aspiration of the vomitus .
The dangers of death from acute alcohol poisoning are mainly seen in persons suffering from chronic alcoholism . This is due to the fact that as one gets used to high amount of alcohol in the body , the body adapts to such an extent that you are capable of ingesting even more with the danger of exceeding the limit that the body can tolerate . We have mentioned the risks of liver cirrhosis with chronic abuse of alcohol ( the best measure of checking for effects of alcohol in your liver is regular liver function tests , especially the measure of the levels of an enzyme known as gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase , also known as gamma GT ). The heart may also get a condition known as cardiomyopathy with the risk of sudden death . The brain also progressively shrinks , the reason why you see chronic alcoholics suffering from conditions including early onset dementias , tremors
among others . There is also a danger of malnutrition because chronic alcoholism doesn ’ t mix well with healthy and regular intake of food .
