The genetics of depression , like most psychiatric disorders , are not as simple or straightforward as in purely genetic diseases such as Huntington ’ s chorea or cystic fibrosis .
Major events : Even good events such as starting a new job , graduating , or getting married can lead to depression . So can moving , losing a job or income , getting divorced , or retiring . Suicidal thoughts is the most severe form of depression and preventing suicide needs to get a high priority . It requires strategies at all levels of the community . Everyone can help prevent suicide by learning warning signs , promoting prevention and resilience and committing to social change .

At a personal level if you are concerned about a loved one or friend these are 5 tips on what you can do : Ask if they are thinking about suicide - this sounds scary and I ’ m sure most of us would be hesitant to do this but research has shown this is quite useful ; Keep them safe - reduce access to lethal means for those at risk ; Be there with them - listen to what they need ; Help them connect with ongoing support ; and Stay connected - follow up to see how they are doing
Let us be our brother ’ s ( sister ’ s ) keeper in this war against suicide ; you may just be the difference between life and death . ■
