Phenomenal Woman
By Marion Wakahe
D
r. Hadiyah Nicole Green, a
multidisciplinary physicist who
attained her Ph.D. in physics
from the University of Alabama at
Birmingham, has become the first to
successfully cure cancer using laser-
activated nanoparticles. Dr. Green’s
revolutionary nanoparticle technology
does not require patients to undergo
chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery and
was found to successfully cure cancer after
testing on mice within 15 days. On February 24th 2020, the world
mourned the loss of Katherine Johnson,
a NASA mathematician, who died
at the age of 101. During her tenure
at NASA, Katherine’s work included
calculating trajectories, launch windows
and emergency return paths for Project
Mercury spaceflights. Her calculations
were critical to the success of the first
and subsequent U.S. crew spaceflights.
Her life story is featured in the 2016 film,
‘Hidden Figures.’
Dr. Green developed an interest in
tackling cancer after witnessing the loss
of her aunt as a result of cancer and her
uncle who suffered serious side effects
from chemotherapy. She founded the Ora
Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation
to fight cancer using laser-activated
nanoparticles. It’s my sincere hope that
this technology is accepted for use on
humans and that it can be scaled and
cascaded sooner rather than later. Melinda Gates, co-chair of the world’s
largest philanthropic organization, that is,
the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
will receive the 2020 Radcliffe Medal
on May 29. The Radcliffe Institute for
Advanced Study Harvard University,
has since 1987 presented the Radcliffe
Medal to an individual who has had a
transformative impact on society. Melinda
Gates will be recognized for her passionate
advocacy in improving the lives of women
Women still face obstacles that make it
difficult to enjoy the full advantages of
employment. Women get paid less than
men do for the same work with the most
recent statistics showing that in the U.S.
the average female's annual salary is 78%
of the average male salary. Whilst the
size of the wage gap varies depending on
occupation, across the board women still
earn less than men do.

and girls in the U.S. and beyond. The
Radcliffe Medal is the institute’s highest
honor. Previous recipients include Hilary
Clinton and Toni Morrison. Melinda is
also the author of the book, ‘The Moment
of Lift.’
The University of Pennsylvania announced
Erika H. James as its new dean for its
famed business school Wharton. Erika H.
James will be the first woman dean and the
first African American to lead the business
school. She’ll assume her new role on 1st
July 2020. James currently serves as dean
of the Goizueta Business School at Emory
University. James has a Ph.D. and master’s
degree in organizational psychology
from the University of Michigan and
a bachelor’s degree in psychology from
Pomona College of the Claremont
Colleges, in California.
The above are four examples of
phenomenal women who’ve recently
been in the news and celebrated for the
ways they’ve contributed to society. These
women are part of a much larger cluster of
women I’d like to refer to as phenomenal
women, who’ve broken barriers and proved
that odds can be overcome with the right
attitude, grit and work. With the right mix
of awe and envy, they inspire women to be
uncomfortable in their comfort places to
push for more and better.
I considered writing on the subject of
women’s gains and challenges they still
face in the workplace from before March
8th as a way to honor the gender. On the
day, there was a lot of information shared
especially on social media about women
and the phenomenal things they’ve done
to impact the world. This year’s theme was
