It doesn’t have to cost too much nor do
you need to go too far. The point is to
allow yourself to be in different spaces.
Rest: Rest improves productivity and
doesn’t take away from it as some would
imagine. It’s very easy to slip into burn out
as we work and for that reason we ought
to do ourselves a favor and take breaks
from work as well as get a good night’s
sleep. You deserve it.
Play: Dance with your partner, play
hide and seek with your children, play
hopscotch, whatever it takes play. All
work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Journal: Journaling improves mental
well-being as well as keeping memory
sharp. Journals can also be referred to as
a reminder of one’s growth over the years.
It’s a good idea to jot down thoughts,
hopes, expectations, etc.
Making It Stick
Achieving the above is a process that will
take time. Many times we feel like giving
up but there are things we can do to
realize the skills and habits as presented
above. Here are a few tips:
Write down your plans on paper. I
recently read that writing on paper
actually increases recall more than on
soft copy. I can’t verify this but being the
greatest proponent of pen and paper you
can imagine that this was most appealing
to me. Over and above that, when writing
down your goals utilize the acronym
SMART it will never get tired.
Break down your goals into monthly,
weekly and daily plans. This will motivate
you as the days pass by because you’ll
be able to clearly see growth and
improvement feeding in to the bigger
vision you have.
Be accountable to someone who is close
enough for you to share your goals with
but not someone who is too close that
you can get away with disappointing. I
find that a mentor is probably the best
person to share your goals with because
this is a person you admire and would
want to create a good impression on.
Schedule monthly/weekly meetings with
this person (whatever is most comfortable
for the two of you) and let them see your
progress which will be available in your
journal and of course in your memory so
that they can then advise on how best to
move forward.
Treat yourself. Don’t forget to give yourself
a pat on the back every time you achieve
the goals you set out for yourself. Celebrate
small wins. You’ve put in the hard work
and it has paid off so treat yourself. Be it a
massage, a bar of chocolate, a glass of wine,
whatever makes you happy, go ahead and
do it. Also remember not to be too hard
on yourself when you fail, you are human.
Just pick yourself up and try again and be
proud of the fact that you did indeed try.
Have a blessed 2020 and a blessed new
decade. Most importantly, embrace the
Nike slogan: Just Do It!
