focus solely on meeting and convention
business and leave transient tourism
marketing to other entities. CVB’s can
either be membership based just like an
association or non membership based.
CVB’s are primarily funded by the local
governments, usually through a portion of
hotel occupancy taxes. As the marketing
arm of the destination, the CVB is
responsible for creating public awareness
about its destination and ultimately
booking the meeting and event business
that feeds the economic engine of the
region.
Conference Tourism enhances the quality
of life for a local community through
creating jobs, bringing in tax Dollars
(hotel taxes) for improvement of service
and infrastructure, and improving quality
of life for citizens among others.
Conference Tourism is one of the
world’s largest service exports and largest
employers on the planet. In the US for
example travel and tourism ranks as the
6th biggest employment sector providing
jobs to 14.4 million people; direct travel
spending contributed more that $ 813
billion to the Nations economy in 2011
and generated $124 billion in tax revenues
(2012 report from travel industry
association).
Indeed Kenya has to realize that travel and
conference tourism is a mighty economic
engine and CVB’s are the key drivers.
National and County Governments
should actively invest time and resources
in this venture and be willing to foot the
bill to set the ball rolling.

To be certain, Nairobi has never lost
its vibrant conference tourism product.
The product has to be made more at-

outstanding. Many cities are loudly

national spending averages for meetings
the event impact calculator allows CVBs
to measure the economic impact by
local standards. The calculator provides a
dynamic and credible industry standard
to quantify an events full economic value
in terms of direct expenditure, taxes,
employment, wages and total return on
investment.

TNHCC is poised to show strong
growth in the convention business, and
