Hey son, GO TO WORK!
An editorial on child labor by Ethan Schlussel
Sending children to work before they are even in 6th grade may be necessary to keep up with paying debts to the government or simply putting food on the table. Sure it may help the family, but taking away the childhood from a kid is not right. When America became an industrialized country, people moved from the west into cities on the east coast to find jobs. Typically, these jobs did not earn much pay so the children were forced to work in factories. The factories that hired children were the most dangerous factories. They hired children for these jobs because they were quick and could move around easily. Another reason some specific factories hired children was because sometimes there were small pieces like switches or broken pieces inside a machine which needed to be fixed, and could not be reached by adults because their hands were too big.
If I could stop the terrible conditions that children go through I would. I do not find it to be very fair that these children are stripped from their childhood many years too early. Even if it is necessary for the children to work because of debts or other financial reasons they should not have to work as many hours as a full grown man. They should only have to work between 3-5 hours after they have had a day of education so when they grow up they do not have to work in a factory but they could earn a respectable job. For example they could become a lawyer if they wanted to.
I cannot believe that people send their kids to work with such terrible conditions. Either the conditions are fixed and there are less hours that are necessary for the kids to work or, a law is passed declaring child labor illegal. Child labor is not right and must be stopped!
