LEADERS IN THE GARDEN
18 students participated in the Sustainable Communities Project - Leaders in the Garden Service Project. Students from various schools in the Houston area joined together to assist students at Cristo Rey Jesuit with cleaning, organizing, and prepping the school garden for the Fall semester. This service-learning project allowed students to meet new peers and use communication and problem-solving skills to complete tasks.
The garden was overgrown with weeds, had a pest problem, and damaged debris spattered throughout. In addition to the services given at Cristo Rey Jesuit, students traveled to Galveston Island State Park to clean trash from the beach. A Texas Parks and Wildlife interpreter explained to the group the dangers of trash to the habitat and the importance of the help provided with the beach clean-up. Students then enjoyed a tour of the Moody Garden Aquarium Pyramid to explore marine biology, conservation, and research of ocean habitats.
Thanks to the efforts of the participants, the garden is ready for fall planting and Galveston Island State park is cleaner.
