The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Harris County 4-H Unit and 26 students, faculty, staff, parents, and volunteers at Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy gathered to celebrate the official opening of the new school garden. The vision for a school garden began as part of the Sustainable Communities Project in 2016. With the recent move to their new school, facility students worked together to design and construct an open space of the premises into their garden. During the celebration two senior students presented on the meaning of the garden’s name “The Knight’s Glade” and “The importance of Urban Agriculture.”
Mickey Leland Principal, Dr. Dameion Crook and Texas A&M University Professor, Dr. Manuel Pina provided words of encouragement to students to continue to seek opportunities to enhance their knowledge in agriculture and leadership. Harris County Precinct One Commissioner, Rodney Ellis provided both Mickey Leland College Preparatory and the Harris County 4-H Unit a Resolution in recognition of the community partnership to provide students hands-on learning in gardening, health and well-being, agricultural sciences, agri-business, and agricultural engineering.
