Polly’ s Mission
What did you think about the primordial soup in this month’ s issue of AQUILA? Now, the primordial soup Harvey was talking about wasn’ t one you could eat. But it got me thinking, not about the origin of life on Earth. Not even about science in particular. It got me thinking about how much I enjoy a supersatisfying bowl of hot, steaming soup. Here’ s MY primordial soup recipe. It may not actually be capable of giving spawn to organic existence as we know it, but it IS giving LIFE.

STEP 1:
First, add the sofrito mix to a large saucepan with a little bit of olive oil. Place on a low heat.
The sofrito mix represents hydrogen in this tortured analogy, but really it’ s 1 chopped onion, 1 chopped carrot, 2 sticks of celery and 2 cloves of garlic, chopped.
STEP 2:
Next, add 1 tsp of paprika, 1 tsp of mixed herbs, and stir in. These represent ammonia.
STEP 3:
Now add salt and pepper to taste. These are the positive and motivational vibes – not very scientific I’ ll grant you, but who wants to eat primordial soup without any primordial seasoning? Not me.
STEP 4:
Add a tin of tomatoes( methane) and the stock( water), then place on a low simmer for 3 minutes before adding the pasta pieces( carbon dioxide). o
