MAKE A MYTHOLOGICAL MOVING MONSTER
As we’ ve seen in the May 2025 issue of AQUILA magazine, the ancient
Greeks sure loved a good story. We know that the Greeks excelled at mathematics and science too, but they were also highly inventive in their myths and legends. They did not just like a good monster in a tale, they went completely off the scale and made the evil beasts as elaborate as they could. You name it, they included it: some wings here, a few extra heads there not to mention fiery breath, claws / talons / beaks and a biting viper’ s tail or two!
Polly’ s Mission
Your mission is to display your design technology skills as you invent and make your own terrifying monsters to scare your friends. These monsters will be able to come‘ alive’ with a range of simply made moving parts.

STEP 1: Plan The plan is to make the monster models achieve more intricate movements by jointing the body parts. Size is important so think carefully about the type of dimensions you are going to use first. The larger the model the more detail you will be able to include.
STEP 2: Think about your themes Paper fasteners( split pins) make effective joints, and each moving part will need its own rod( straw). Identify the parts you wish to move; wings, tail, jaw, for example. Locate the paper fasteners carefully on the model as shown and tape the straws into place.( See Figure 1). o
