The Night I Conquered My Fear

- By Jordan Stackhouse

“And now, singing the National Anthem tonight is Senior, Wakefield High School student, Captain of our Cross-Country team, Jordan Stackhouse.” I grabbed the microphone, took a deep breath and sang. As I was singing, something incredible happened, the whole fan section of the students joined me in singing the song. I got goosebumps while singing. I look over at them and just start to smile. The crowd went wild. I have never been so happy about something I have accomplished in my life. After I hand the microphone to the announcer, I immediately run into my best friend’s arms. She’s in tears, telling me how proud she is that I did this. I go back to the student section and everyone is coming to me with open arms. Still shaking on what I just did, I have friends come up to me, and kids that came to support the opposing team come up to me and tell me how great it did. I see my mom from a distance and I ran into her arms. Our hug was as if I haven’t seen her in a year. My family and friends were so proud of what I had accomplished, and believed in me all along. I was happy to make my parents proud of me. But, more importantly, even though I was so nervous and almost wanted to back out, I don’t regret singing. This moment is something I will treasure forever."

This is a piece I wrote talking about the time I sang in front of an audience for the first time. I specifically chose this piece because out of the whole article, this was the most important and had the most impact on me.
