Katahdin Woods and Waters National Scenic Byway
The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Scenic Byway is an 89-mile route in northern Maine that showcases the natural beauty of the region.
Starting in Medway and passing through East Millinocket, Millinocket, and Patten, the byway offers stunning views of Mount
Katahdin, the East Branch of the Penobscot River, and the surrounding North Woods. Highlights include access to Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and the International Appalachian Trail, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife watching.
Historically, the area is tied to the Penobscot Nation and was central to Maine’ s logging industry. The byway also commemorates conservation efforts that led to the establishment of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in 2016.
