The St. John Valley / Fish River Scenic Byway is a picturesque route
Route capturing the essence of Digital the region’ s cultural and map and natural beauty. This 92- highlights. mile byway follows the St. John River, which forms the border between the United States and Canada, providing stunning views of rolling farmland, dense forests, and the river itself.
Beginning in the town of Dickey, this route winds through several historic communities, including Allagash, St. Francis, Fort Kent, Madawaska, and Van Buren before ending in Hamlin. Along the way, travelers can explore landmarks like the Fort Kent Blockhouse, a historic site dating back to the Aroostook War, and the Acadian Village in Van Buren, which offers insights into the rich Acadian culture that defines much of the area.
The St. John Valley is rooted in Acadian history, as the area was settled by Acadians who were displaced during the Great Expulsion in the 18th century. The cultural influence of these early settlers is evident in the language, cuisine, and traditions that are still prominent in the valley today.
In addition to its cultural significance, the National Scenic Byway offers breathtaking views of the natural landscape. The route is particularly stunning during the fall, when the foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold.
