The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Scenic Byway is an 89-mile route in northern Maine that showcases the natural beauty of the region .
Starting in Medway and passing through East Millinocket , Millinocket , and Patten , the byway offers stunning views of Mount
Katahdin , the East Branch of the Penobscot River , and the surrounding North Woods . Highlights include access to Baxter State Park , Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument , and the International Appalachian Trail , offering opportunities for hiking , fishing , and wildlife watching .
Historically , the area is tied to the Penobscot Nation and was central to Maine ’ s logging industry . The byway also commemorates conservation efforts that led to the establishment of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in 2016 .
