Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is THE year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts in The Maine Highlands and home to Maine ’ s highest peak , Katahdin . Beginning with Maine Governor Percival P . Baxter ’ s purchase of 6,000 acres of land in 1930 , the park ’ s total size now stands at an impressive 209,644 acres . There are more than 40 peaks and ridges in the park and more than 215 miles of trails for hiking and climbing .
Baxter State Park is an ideal location for biking , climbing , picnicking , paddling , and viewing wildlife . You might even spot the elusive Maine moose . For the full experience , rent a cabin or stay at a campground to immerse yourself in the Maine wilderness .
It ’ s important to research and plan your visit to understand park guidelines and to be prepared for whatever nature might throw at you . Day-hiking Katahdin ? Make sure you register and reserve a parking space . Camping with your family ? Pets and firewood are not permitted and you must limit your party to 12 or less . If you ’ re looking for an easier day-hike , there are plenty of options if you have just 2-4 hours to spare but want to experience this gorgeous park for yourself .

Hidden gems

KATAHDIN WOODS & WATERS SCENIC BYWAY
The Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway is 89 miles long and takes visitors through the gorgeous natural landscape , beginning at the southern entrance of Baxter State Park and winding your way through Millinocket along the Penobscot River , where trails were once used by the people of the Penobscot , Passamaquoddy , Micmac , Maliseet , and Abenaki tribes .
TUBING AT ABOL BRIDGE
Tucked away just off one of the north woods ’ secluded logging roads is Abol Bridge Campground and Store where your unique adventure begins . Grab a tube and a life jacket and catch the shuttle to enjoy a relaxing tube ride down the calmest points of the Penobscot River with incredible views .

Baxter State Park itself is often called one of Maine ’ s “ hidden gems ,” but a gem within a gem can be found at Ledge Falls where a series of natural water slides provide fun for the whole family . Grab an inflatable pool toy and cruise down the minirapids , slides , and cascades that make for a whole lot of splashing fun .
