A Neighbor’s Yard
Marissa Oshona
The large oak tree towering over a patio
Looking out to a backyard filled with life.
Well-worn seat cushions faded from many summers in the sun
On chairs that face a table filled with unfinished games.
Games waiting to be played.
The hurried buzzing of bees from flower to flower
Mixed with the sound of a lawn mower eating away at the grass.
Laughter of friends who have known each other for so long.
Three girls lying on green grass .
Which tickles their skin.
Sunscreen slathered on the two sisters who burn so easily.
And for their friend,
Bug spray, which always seems to fail.
A bond as strong as iron is between them and the summer ahead.
A mother looks out the kitchen window and smiles at the girls.
Inside fresh cookies are being made
And will soon be taken outside with lemonade.
The girls await their arrival.
Happiness is in abundance as summer is here..
